2    SAFETY FIRST & ALWAYS
a. Cold range - All firearms will remain unloaded except while under the direction of range officer
Shotguns are loaded at a shooting position only.
b. Precussion revolver shooters may charge five cylinders with ball and powder in the safety area,
however, they may not "cap" them until they are called to the firing line.
c. There will be no handling of ammunition or caps in the safety areas.
d. 180 degree plane must never be broken, even with an empty firearm.  Violations can lead to
disqualification from match.
e. Dropped ammo is dead - can not be picked up.
f. Dropped firearms are to be left on the ground and retrieved and cleared by range official.  Empty
firearms result in a minimum stage disqualification, loaded firearms are a mandatory disqualification
from the match.
g. Accident discharges (AD's) striking the ground within 5 feet of the shooter will result in disqualification.
h. Rifles and shotguns must be put down with actions open and empty otherwise the shooter will be
assessed a 10 second safety violation.
i. Eye protection is mandatory for both shooters and spectators, ear protection is strongly recommended.
j. Pistols must be cocked after clearing leather, arm extended and at or beyond a 45 degree angle
down range.  Violations will lead to disqualification from the match (weak hand cocking is
recommended for inexperienced shooters).
k. Cowboy Action matches are not fast draw competitions.  Any unsafe gun handling or fanning will
result in disqualification.
l. Rifles and pistols always start with the hammer down on an empty chamber, shotguns are staged
unloaded with the actions open.
m. Firearms are not to be handled except in designated safety areas or on the firing line under the
supervision of a range official.
n. When transporting firearms from one location to another, pistols are to be holstered, rifles and
shotguns are to have actions broken open.
o. Ammo required for reloads during the course of fire must be carried on the shooter's person in a
bandolier, belt or pocket.  Traditional designs only.
