Thank You VERY much to Cutler and Pink for helping with match set up on Friday! You're efforts are greatly appreciated!The change of set up to 3 bays and double shooting them made for a lot less work! But this may change for the next match... as we are finished with the "summer" schedule.
We are considering just expanding this for next month and double shooting 4 bays. All input/feedback on this idea will be appreciated.Thanks also, very much, to those who helped with tear down and by putting the steel in the storage can! Both possies really did great... Thank You and please keep it up!
Looks like I "jinxed" us last month by claiming that the hottest match of the year was now (then) behind us! I believe it was even hotter this month, sorry!
This was our second month with a Wild Bunch class! As we were left with a few questions last month on how to run a class like this some more investigating was done and the info passed on... As your webmaster did not shoot, due to a kidney stone from hell, there was only one shooter in the Wild Bunch class and he was on the other posse. I shall chat with him soon as to how it went...

As for the rest of the match, I think all went well... I promise to NOT do the 1/2 second bonus thing again! You can be sure that the idea was stolen from a "shoot book" that is in the "reference" library around here, but we all agreed that it didn't work out. ( You see, at the bigger matches the score keeper on the bay does not have to total the time... to much hassle)
I truly want feedback from the shooters as to how to improve the matches! The number of stages, the double shooting issue, the amount of movement, splitting up the guns... I feel like I'm writing stages in a vacuum here... what say YOU?

I will be offering some rules issues for discussion by the Rio Cowboys from time to time. Here is the first one. I will pose several questions for you to consider the answers and then see how your answers compare with the latest rulings by the Wild Bunch, SASS RO committee or other sources:
It is important for all shooters to understand if Gunfighter shooters are shooting the correct way (as most folks will get involved spotting) so these questions are for everyone to understand. What are the penalties if any for these actions:
Stage instructions for all shooters is to dump 5 rounds from first pistol on left pistol target and 5 rounds from second pistol on right pistol target.
1. First gunfighter comes to line pulls both pistols and dumps all five rounds from his left pistol on the left target then takes his right pistol and dumps five rounds on the right pistol target.
2. Second gunfighter comes to line pulls both pistols and alternates rounds from each pistol until he gets five hits on left pistol target then switches over and dumps five rounds alternating pistols on right hand target.
3. Third gunfighter comes to line and pulls both pistols and alternates shots from each pistol putting a round on each target as he alternates guns and targets, in the end getting 5 rounds on each target.
4. Fourth gunfighter comes to the line and has a brain fade and dumps all rounds from both pistols on the left target.
5. Fifth gunfighter comes to the line and while shooting, slips off the hammer (short strokes it) with his thumb on one pistol and in the end only manages to get 9 rounds on the two targets, 5 on one and 4 on the other. Gunfighter keeps cocking his pistol that only fires 4 rounds and after going around the cylinder a couple of times finally gives up and holsters both pistols.

1. Shooter is shooting a long range target with his rifle and accidentally has a long range AD (over 15 yards from him) and the bullet strikes the ground then kicks up and hits the correct rifle target. Hit or Miss?\1. Hit, it doesn't matter the route the bullet takes if it finally hits the correct target, it is a hit.
2, Shooter is shooting his pistol at a pistol target that is located just above a shotgun target. Shooter misses pistol target low, round hits shotgun target and kicks up into the correct pistol target. Hit or Miss?2. Hit, it doesn't matter the route the bullet takes if it finally hits the correct target, it is a hit.
3. Shooter is shooting his rifle at rifle target and misses low hitting the target stand right below the target. Hit or Miss?3. Miss, the shooter did not hit the target, he hit the stand which is not the target.
4. Shooter is shooting his pistol at pistol target that is located just above shotgun target. Shooter misses pistol target low, round hits shotgun target and bullet kicks up into the INcorrect pistol target. Miss or Procedural?
4. Procedural, shooter hit the correct type of target but in the wrong order. Whether it hit the shotgun target first is not a factor in this case since it hit the pistol targets but not in the right order. See RO I Handbook flow chart.

Recapping:
We very much need posse marshals for each posse! I would like to hear from shooters with the experience, and training, that would like to step up ahead of time, even early that morning, for this very important role.
Summer schedule: We are in summer schedule now. That means earlier start times for the hottest months, June thru September. Long Range will be suspended for the earlier start time of 8:00am.
We will be shooting 6 stages on three bays. Double shooting on bays 2, 3, and 4 will allow for 6 stages with less cart movement in the heat.

The issue of the raising costs of awards and primers brings us to another point of needed discussion. With SASS having created so many new classes over the past couple of years that we now find that giving out 5 places/awards per class needs to be trimmed back to 3 per, once we are out of the current stock of awards.
And on the issue of the afore mentioned primers, if you would like primers instead of a steel plate then stay for awards and tell us! Two boxes, 200, for first place and one box for second or third.

Winter Range TG Meeting

A meeting of the Territorial Governors attending Winter Range was held the first evening of the Winter Range main match. No formal votes are taken at this type meeting similar to meetings held in conjunction with the SASS Regionals. These meetings are held to determine interest in a subject to put it on the ballot for the Convention in December. Sometimes, straw poll type votes are taken to indicate interest in a topic.
There were only three topics discussed in any length. First, a vendor had supplied a copy of a new receiver mounted sight for long range lever rifles to be considered by SASS. This is a copy of a fairly simple peep Lyman sight that is mounted on the side of the receiver and was installed in the factory on rifles such as the Winchester 1895. The discussion centered on whether it was wise to open up use of receiver mounted sights for long range lever action rifles. There was little support for doing so.
There was a lengthy discussion on establishing a new set of rules that could allow the use of frangible bullets for SASS matches, should that be required someday. These bullets are normally considerably lighter than lead bullets and in order to shoot them successfully a velocity of greater than SASS rule maximums would probably be needed. There are many states now starting to outlaw lead in various forms and the group decided it made sense to be proactive in STUDYING the issue (it was studied by SASS a couple of years ago and rejected but the technology has evolved substantially since). A committee will be established to review what should SASS do about frangible bullets, if anything, and report out at EOT first and then again at the SASS Convention. As you can imagine, this was a hot topic of discussion and there were many varied views. If anyone has any experience hand loading with frangible bullets please contact me.
There was a lengthy discussion on SASS Categories. Pressure continues from match directors on this issue, mostly to freeze the number of categories, and pressure from members to add categories. Several alternatives were discussed with most consensus on an alternative that would allow clubs to select age based category splits if there are a sufficient number of shooters while retaining junior and senior and above categories (remember most TG shooters are older). The thrust of this idea was to make the categories in a match to have a mostly equal number or competitors. The idea of combining Modern and Traditional categories into a single category with a split somewhere around 35 years old was again discussed. This issue will probably not get settled in the near term. The Territorial Governors did agree to set up a committee to make some recommendations for further discussion at the Convention in December. If a solution is developed to allow match directors more flexibility to tailor categories by age, and eliminate those not supported by their members, new categories might be considered. The consensus seems to be to find ways to have a more level playing field by age and not require matches to require categories not supported by the numbers. Don’t know if anything will come from this effort as it is not new and gets discussed every single year.
